Wednesday, December 7, Defense of the Jury

Objective: By the end of class, students will apply new vocabulary words, identify logical and emotional appeals and determine if author's intent was effective in his persuasive essay.

DO NOW

USe three of the vocabulary words on page 309 to write a creative, cohesive paragraph.

Direct Instruction

1. Review emotional and logical appeals.

How do you identify an emotional appeal?
How do you identify logical appeals?
Which creates a stronger "case" to persuade you?

Guided Practice

2. Read Defense of Jury - page 310-311 and identify loaded words and anecdotes (determine emotional appeals) and facts, statistics, etc (logical appeals).

3. At end of the article, do we have more emotional or logical appeals?

Independent Practice

5. Do test practice page 312.

6. Writing / Opinion

Decide if this article is credible by weighing the emotional and logical appeals (as we just did). Did this author convince you that the jury is the best way to determine justice? Why or why not?

Then, write a letter to the editor of the newspaper in which this article was published telling him / her what you think of the article and why. Write three paragraphs and be sure to reference quotes from the article. Also, use three vocabulary words in your letter.

USE ANT in opening paragraph! (attention getter, necessary information, thesis)

EXAMPLE;

Dear Mr. Editor:

Introduction - What a great article about our justice system! After reading, Defense of the Jury, I changed my mind about some things.......

2nd paragraph - focus on logical appeals and what you learned

3rd paragraph - focus on emotional appeals and tell if the author has persuaded you to his opinion (that juries are best and why.

Closure

Share some letters - they should clearly show the difference between logical and emotional appeals.

Exit Pass -Identify the logical and emotional appeal in the following paragraph.

I really need you to do your homework and take notes because you have a test tomorrow and i want you to do well. Studies show that 78% of students that do their homework on a regular basis, score higher than those who do not.

HW - Write a sentence for each vocabulary word using context clues.
