Objective: By the end of class, students will demonstrate ability to use "ANT" in essay opening paragraphs and identify main ideas and supporting details in non-fiction in order to determine author's purpose and reliability.

DO NOW

Look at your notes regarding main idea and supporting details from "INTERNMENT." What is the author's purpose? Is it informative, persuasive, entertainment? What supporting details support your answer? BE SPECIFIC!

PART 2 - Writing an effective Opening paragraph using ANT. Write this acronym in your notebooks!

A = Attention Getter (for example, a question, a quote, an exclamation)

N = Necessary information ( a sentence on the topic)

T= Thesis Statement (main sentence that incorporates what whole essay is going to be about...it must include the names of the authors or articles to which you are referring)

Here is an example:

"All wars are civil wars, because all men are brothers, " (Francois Fenelon). Why do civil wars occur? History has demonstrated that civil wars occur worldwide for many different reasons. In article A, it suggests that religion is the primary cause of wars within countries but in article B, Dr. so n so claims that the trigger for most of these conflicts is wealth. Each provide examples to support their claims with the hope of ending this vicous cycle.

NOW - identify the Attention getter, the necessary information and the thesis from the above opening paragraph.

1. Read together, PEACE ISNT IMPOSSIBLE, PAGES 240-241. What genre is it? Answer the following in your notebooks (just like you did for Internment):

a. What is the main idea?

b. What supporting details does the author provide?

c. After reviewing, are his details based on fact?

d. Is this a first hand account or second hand account?

e. After reviewing his supporting details, what is his purpose? Write down specific supporting details to back up your answer.
