Monday, December 3, HOMS

Objective: By th end of class, students will choose a vignette from HOMS and create a visual collage and written summary of it.  Students will also practice grammar.

DO NOW

Comprehension - noun - to have an understanding


Write a sentence for each form of the word.

 
Direct Instruction

LAPTOP PROJECT - you may work in pairs

1. Use google docs presentation or power point to create one visual slide of the vignette of your choice. This visual collage must include a minimum of 6 images.

 2. Then, on another slide,  summarize that vignette in a clear, concise paragraph.

Send to me or share with me so I can print immediately.

3. Then create a wordle for the vignette.  Your wordle should contain at least 20 words.  You must save it as a PDF on the desktop and then send to me.  if it is not saved as a PDF, I will not be able to open it.

Friday, November 30, House On Mango Street

Objective: By the end of class, students will analyze the characters and houses using graphic organizers provided and demonstrate comprehension of HOMS throuh page 28, THOSE WHO DON't. 

DO NOW

Complete character traits for first five characters on handout provided.

Direct Instruction

Review the descriptions of the houses from homework. Discuss. 

Distribute character trait sheet and complete through all the characters  that we have read about so far.

READ - together to page 34 - identfy characters  and apply traits. Review new study packet.

 Independent on NEO - 50 points -

Describe Esperenza in detail - physically, emotionally and academically. What does she look like? How does she feel (is she happy, sad, lonely, etc)? I she book or street smart? How do you know?  Write one paragraph for each using at least one example from the text in each paragraph to support your answer. I will help you find examples from the text  if you know what you are looking for!

Objective: By the end of class, students will identify character traits and use graphic organizers to describe the homes introduced to date in HOMS and make real life connections.

 In what areas of your life are you most free to do what you like?  In what areas of your life do you have the least freedom?  Consider the roles gender, race, religion, education, class, age, and upbringing play in limiting an individual’s personal freedom.

Direct Instruction

Review answers from study guide packet for Cathy Queen of Cats and Our Good Day.

Reread  THOSE WHO DON"T and answer the study guide questions for this vignette.  Turn in packet and get new one for next section.

Use the book to complete the first three questions on the handout about the HOUSES described in House in Mango Street. You can complete Esperenza's, Cathy's and Louie's today.

Read together - "Cathy Queen of Cats" and "Our Good Day"

Discuss question #14 on handout on page 5 & 6 regarding racism and discrimination.

Answer questions 1-13 on page 5 and then questions 1-13 on page 7 of handout.

Review answers / Discuss connections to our own lives.

Objective:By the end of class, students will read and interpret vignettes from House on Mango Street, make real life connections and practice written expression using neos.

DO NOW

Is it possible to be treated unfairly because of the texture of your hair? have you ever heard or seen that happen to someone you know? Is that discrimination or racism?

Direct Instruction

Complete work on neos from yesterday -

1. Where does your name come from? Does it have a a meaning? Were you named after a relative? Do you like your name? Would you choose another name if you could? Do people call you by your given name or  do you have a nickname? Do you prefer your nickname? Why or why not?

2. Compare in detail Esperenza's family dream house to the house on mango street. At least 5-7 sentences.  Intergrate the comparison, sentence by sentence.

3. Describe your dream house in 5-7 sentences. What makes it special to you ?

4. Although this is a very short vignette, the hairstyles of each family member say a lot about their personality.  From these descriptions alone, provide three character traits of each member.



5 .  Is life better if you accept and make the best of what you have or if you dream of what you want and constantly strive without ever been certain that you will get what you want?   

Spell Check, print and submit to me for a 50 point grade (each worth 10 points).

Monday, November 26, House On Mango Street Intro

Objective: By the end of class, students will be introduced to author Sandra Cisneros, her inspiration behind HOMS and make real life connections.  Students will also practice using proper forms of adjectives, nouns and verbs.

DO NOW
Contagion is a noun and Contagious is the adjective form of the word. They are the same word in a different form.  Both mean the spreading of disease. Use each in a sentence.  Remember a noun is a THING and an adjective is a word that describes a noun.  You can HAVE a noun, but BE an adjective.

Wednesday, November 21, Odyssey QUIZ

Objective: By the end of class, students will demonstrate comprehension of The Odyssey and create visual or verbal collage of pertinent words/ images that reflect character traits.

Chivalry and Chivalrous.  The first is a noun.. The second is an adjective. They both mean, to be noble, honest , respectable, have manners, etc. Use each in a sentence using contenxt clues.

 Choose one :

1-Research one of the themes from the Odyssey from the handout provided.   How does this theme relate to your life and the reality around you? 5-7 sentences - paragraph format.

2. Create a visual collage of the odyssey and include the themes. Use powerpoint slide. Minimum of 6 pics.

3.  Create a verbal collage of the Odyssey and include the themes. Use wordle. Minimum 15 words.

Objective: By the end of class, students will analyze and evaluate themes and symbols in the Odyssey by reading and idscussing scenerios and answering questions that make real life connections.

DO NOW

Was Odysseus just in murdering the suitors for "trying to steal his world"? Why or why not? Do you think Odysseus ever tells Penelope about Calypso and Circe? If so, what is her reaction? If not, would this act of deceit be understandable?
