Tuesday, November 27, HOMS

Objective:By the end of class, students will read and interpret vignettes from House on Mango Street, make real life connections and practice written expression using neos.

DO NOW

Is it possible to be treated unfairly because of the texture of your hair? have you ever heard or seen that happen to someone you know? Is that discrimination or racism?

Direct Instruction

Complete work on neos from yesterday -

1. Where does your name come from? Does it have a a meaning? Were you named after a relative? Do you like your name? Would you choose another name if you could? Do people call you by your given name or  do you have a nickname? Do you prefer your nickname? Why or why not?

 HOMS

2. Compare in detail Esperenza's family dream house to the house on mango street. At least 5-7 sentences.  Intergrate the comparison, sentence by sentence.

3. Describe your dream house in 5-7 sentences. What makes it special to you ?

HAIRS

4. Although this is a very short vignette, the hairstyles of each family member say a lot about their personality.  From these descriptions alone, provide three character traits of each member.

5 .  Is life better if you accept and make the best of what you have or if you dream of what you want and constantly strive without ever been certain that you will get what you want?

Spell Check, print and submit to me for a 50 point grade (each worth 10 points).

READ "Boys and Girls." Choose one of the three short essay topics to write about. Type on a neo - 30 points.

Read MY NAME and answer the seven questions on the hand out. You do not have to write the essay portion for this vignette because you did a similar one yesterday.

 Exit Pass

What do you think Cisneros means when she writes, "I am a red balloon, a red balloon tied to an anchor." (page 9)
