Friday, November 9, Making Connections

Objective: By the end of class, students will make connections between Odysseus' adventures and real life and practice new vocabulary.

DO NOW

TUMULT is a NOUN.  If you want to use it as an adjective, the word is TUMULTUOUS. Use each in a sentence with context clues.

Direct Instruction

Review answers on handout regarding Odysseus' character traits that are revealed when on Cyclopes island.

On NEOS

Look at the Cyclops' pictures on pages 660 and 662. In a short paragraph (3-5 sentences), compare them and use as many descriptive words (adjectives) as possible. Which one is a more realistic depiction of Polyphemus?

Connecting to the Cyclops

The Cyclops represents lawlessness. We obviously have never met a Cyclops, but we have met lawless people. In a short paragraph, explain how you deal with people who think they are above the law.

Connecting to The Land of the Lotus Eaters

The Land of the Lotus Eaters is a clear warning against drug use. Do you want to forget your goals in life and live clueless and happy? Should you leave your friends behind if they are doing drugs and you can't reason with them, or do you try to help them?

 GUIDED

Read together pages 673-675 - island of CIRCE.

View through Circe's Island answering film review questions along the way.

Review answers.

Exit Pass

Odysseus sleeps with Circe, he says, for the good of his men, but he didn't really want to.  Do you believe him? Why or why not? Is this a weakness?
