Objective: Students will compare the average lives of American teenagers today to that of those growing up in the 1960's.

DO NOW

What would you do if your best friend killed someone by accident?

Then you will get a laptop:

Research life in the 1960's.

a. How was the economy? What did a gallon of gas cost? A gallon of milk? Loaf of bread? A car? What else?
b. What kind of music was popular?
c. Who was President in 1967?
d. What kinds of clothes did they wear? Look for photos.
e. Hairstyles?
f. What else can you find out??
Write down your answers to be collected at end of class. You may work in pairs.

Objective: Students will be introduced to the theme of Identity. They will define identity and distinguish between individual and group identity.

Do NOW

Think about the ways people are separated from one another into different groups. Write a paragraph or two considering the following:
  1. How does this apply to groups of teenagers?
  2. How do groups of people differ from other groups of people?
  3. How can people join, or leave, certain groups?
  4. Who determines whether a teenager belongs to one group or another?
  5. Into what group do you fit in? Do you feel that might ever change?

1. Groups / gangs / cliques dislike each other for what reasons? List on board.

2. Read first chapter of  Outsiders.  List characters and describe them. Summerize what happens.

Tuesday, June 7, Talk shows and What's in your heart?

Objective: Students will demonstrate understanding of literature through creative exercises of their choice.

DO NOW

Write a horoscope entry for Romeo and Juliet on thursday, the day they die.

1.  Finish talk show presentations.

2. Create tombstones as per the example for two of the following characters that died:

Mercutio
Romeo
Juliet
Tybalt
Lady Montague
Paris

3. What is in YOUR HEART? Draw a giant heart.  In in put the things closest to your heart in the center and those further away along the edges. If there are specific things that you truly do not like and will never find their way into your heart, then put them on the outside.

4. Work on finalizing essays.


Monday, June 6, Romeo and Juliet Talk Show

Objective: Students will demonstrate understanding of how character traits affect behavior.

DO NOW

Choose JUST ONE quote from each section on page 915 Holt text. Identify the metaphor, simile, personificatin or pun (whichever one the section is asking for). So you are answering a total of 4 questions.

R & J Talk show

1. Students will pair up.

2. One will be the Talk show host. The other, a character from Romeo & Juliet.

3. Brainstorm character traits and think about why that character did what he/she did in the story.

4. Develop a set of questions that a talk show host would ask that character. Examples are provided on the handout. You must have a minimum of 6 well thought out questions that require more than yes /no answers.

5. Each group will "perform" their interview in front of the class TODAY.
