Objective: By the end of class, students will complete concrete poems and recreate them on laptops.

Subject / verb agreement worksheet

Direct Instruction

Complete your concrete poem and let me proof read it and make any grammatical corrections and ensure that you have used at least three poetic devices (alliteration, rhyme, metaphor, simile, rhetorical question, hyperbole, etc)

Then, on a laptop, recreate the image of your poem. You may use an outline if necessary. 

Send to me to print and then you can illustrate and color your poem to reflect its contents.

Complete Graphic organizer for a specific thing that you would like to write a poem about.  It can be ANYTHING!

Then we will read CONCRETE POEM DIRECTIONS TOGETHER.  

Use your graphic organizer to begin a poem about your item. Use imagery, using all five senses to describe your item. Your poem can be as simple as 6 lines, one for each bubble on graphic organizer, or you can develop the poem to any extent that you wish.

You will then draw the shape of your item and rewrite your poem into the shape.

OBJECTIVE : By the end of class, students will complete an essay on NEO for a final grade for HOMS.

DO NOW

Is the following a sentence or fragment  - why and can you fix it if it needs fixing to be a sentence:

1.  When ESPERENZA RETURNS TO MANGO STREET.

2. Because she thought Sally needed help.

3. Esperenza cried.

4. That she was smart.

DIRECT INSTRUCTON

Use the handout to choose and essay.  It only needs to be three paragraphs. 
The first paragraph is the introduction that should include the thesis statement provided.  
The second paragraph should contain examples and quotes from the text to support your thesis.  Page numbers with examples have been provided for you.  
The final paragraph should be the conclusion and contain some of your personal thoughts.

You are all doing such a great job improving your writing. Keep it up for one more! Make this your best essay yet :) 100 points.

Explain how the skinny trees represent EsperenzaBe sure to mention physical likenesses as well as thoughts and feelings.

Direct Instruction

Read 74-84 / Discuss each vignette's message / theme. 

Make Connections with the following themes:

1. A house vs a home - do you live in a house, a home or both? Do you dream of having more? Does your family dream of more or are they content?

2. What is the hardest part about being a teenager? Do you realize things now that you didn't several years ago? Do you think you still have a lot to learn socially, academically, emotionally? How and why?

3. Esperenza is talking less and less about her family.  She seems to be drifting away as she grows up.  Is this a necessary stage of maturing? Do all teenagers have to "make a break" of some sort to establish independence? Give me an example.

Write one paragraph for each using at least one example from the text in each paragraph to support your answer.

Write a paragraph for each theme that is developing in the story: The importance of family, HOPE and growing up.  Use examples from the text in each paragraph to support your ideas.

Identify three instances that clearly demonstrate that Esperenza is growing up (if she likes it or not) and the difficulties that accompany this time in her life. Each paragraph should highlight a specific example.

Objective: By the end of class, students will read and interpret HOMS, learn new grammar and vocabulary and use laptops to create a visual representation of Esperenza using images and symbols.

HOMONYMS - words that sound the same and are spelled the same but have different meanings

BEAR (n) - the animal

BEAM (n) - a long plank - a beam that is used in building a house / or a balance beam in gymnastics

WRITE sentences for each of the four words.

NOW BRAINSTORM in groups...
Describe Esperenza in detail - physically, emotionally and academically. What does she look like? How does she feel (is she happy, sad, lonely, etc)? I she book or street smart? How do you know (examples from text?)

Then create a collage of Esperenza including all of these details. You may use symbols and images that represent Esperenza in these three areas.  Use at least 6 images on the one slide. Tomorrow you will be writing three paragraphs to accompany your vision (one para for emotional, one for physical and one for academic.)

Objective: By th end of class, students will choose a vignette from HOMS and create a visual collage and written summary of it.  Students will also practice grammar.

Direct Instruction

LAPTOP PROJECT - you may work in pairs

1. Use google docs presentation or power point to create one visual slide of the vignette of your choice. This visual collage must include a minimum of 6 images.

 2. Then, on another slide,  summarize that vignette in a clear, concise paragraph.

Send to me or share with me so I can print immediately.

3. Then create a wordle for the vignette.  Your wordle should contain at least 20 words.  You must save it as a PDF on the desktop and then send to me.  if it is not saved as a PDF, I will not be able to open it.
