Friday, Sept 28, Justice / Lady or the Tiger Introduction

Objective: By the end of class, students will evaluate various Justice systems and be introduced ot Lady or the Tiger? by Frank Stockton.

Choose three of the five vocabulary words on page 26 (the ones we have been practicing) and write a creative paragraph using all three.

Objective: By the end of class, students will complete a final copy of an essay and type onto neo and print. 

DO NOW

Use awry and tangible each in a sentence using context clues.

Direct Instruction

Review essay guidelines and how to use a neo.  

Guided  & Independent

Continue to develop essay. Please let me see rough draft prior to typing into neo. ...A couple of more things:

1. Indent at the beginning of each paragraph.
2.  Double space.
3. Use spell check on neo. 
4. Make sure your name an date is on the typed copy.
5. Title your essay.

Closure

Proof read your essay and maybe even share with  classmate prior to printing. You may only print once so be sure that you are happy with your work prior to bringing neo to printer.

Objective; By the end of class, students will complete a draft of an essay using rubric and guidelines provided.

Use devious and beguiling in the same sentence (or two consecutive sentences).

Review guidelines and rubric for informational essay. 

Choose one of the two essay topics provided on handout. An outline and sentence starters have been provide for you.  We will review together.

Begin your essay.  By the end of class, you should have a complete rough draft.  be sureto use your best vocabulary, grammar and transitional phrases and words. Pay attention to run-on sentences and proper placement of quotes.

If complete, I will review and edit so you may start working on a final copy.

Objective: By the end of class, students will analyze non-fiction and compare common theme to fiction.

Discuss animal intelligence.  Read "Can Animals Think?" pages 27-29.

From the information regarding animal intelligence, read the following and respond in a 4-5 sentence paragraph:


In The Most Dangerous Game, Zaroff has outwitted every animal he has ever hunted. Humans can reason but are we really more civilized? For instance, animals hunt only for food but humans hunt for sport. We have weapons and continue to create more dangerous ones. So, in your opinion, are humans truly the most savage beast? Why or why not? If you decide yes, is it possible that we will ultimately destroy ourselves? Why? How?

From the information regarding animal intelligence, read the following and respond in a 4-5 sentence paragraph:

Objective: By the end of class, students will review parts of a plot sturcture, analyze behavior, compare character traits and complete plot structure and "map" of island for Dangerous Game.

DO NOW

ONE side of handout - use pages 2-3 from text for answers.

Direct Instruction

Complete Plot Structure. 


Independent

Answer the three questions below in notebooks:

1. How did Rainsford escape/Did you expect him to escape? Why or why not?

2.  After he escaped, he returned to the chataeu.  Did he have other options? What were they?


3.  Why did Rainsford kill Zaroff? Did he have to? What kind of person does that make Rainsford? 


Review answers to above questions and character traits of both Rainsford and Zaroff.  Can we add new traits?

Use Double journal entries to enter 6 quotes from DG and react to each. I will explain if you haven't worked with double journal enries before.

Review The Most Dangerous Game through page 12. 

Character Traits are determined not only by what people look like, but by what they say and do as well. From what we know so far, what kind of person is Rainsford? Zaroff?

Use Venn Diagram provided to compare Rainsford and Zaroff.

Read together - pages 13 - 18 

Double Entry Journal Handout - CHOOSE 6 specific quotes from what we have read so far. Write each one on the left had side and then react to them on the right hand side. Here is an example:

3. Describe the man that answers the door at the chateau. What is his name?
4. On page 9, list words that describe General Zaroff? How is he similar and/or different than Rainsford (what do they have in common / how are they different)?
5. What does Zaroff say that makes us assume that he is a savage like Ivan?
What is Rainsford's profession (page 10)?
6. What does Rainsford think the biggest game is?

WORD SPLASH - analyze the following pictures and list nouns, adjectives and verbs that describe it.





Plot Structure - What is it and how does it help when reading a story? What are the parts of a plot structure? Why are they important? Holt text pages...

CREATE wall words with definitions.

GROUP Grammar game. Pair the words and figure out the "grammar rule." First group to succeed will earn 10 extra credit points.

Copy first five vocabulary words into notebooks. Write a sentence for each.

Direct Instruction

1.  English 1 Overview

* You will learn how to communicate effectively in writing and verbally, use critical thinking skills, problem-solve and use multiple resources to make inferences and decisions.

* We will read several short stories, fiction, non-fiction, articles and novels from various sources.  Just a few include, A Dangerous Game (short fiction), Homer's The Odyssey (greek mythology), Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet.We will use these sources as a basis for discussing real life problems, situations and emotions.  Many of these selections will also model how to use certain literary devices in your own writing.

* We will be writing - A LOT!!! Writing will not only improve the skill itself, but help you retain content information. 

* Materials needed for course: A three subject notebook, pens, pencils, highlighter and a folder or binder to keep work in progress or returned work.

2. Choose one of the sentence starters below and write a clear, concise paragraph using your best grammar and vocabulary.  Do your best to spell out words and not use texting shortcuts.  Your paragraph should be 4-5 sentences long.
