Tuessday, Periods 8 & 9

Objective: By the end of class, students will learn new vocabulary, define and identify emotional and logical appeals and their affect on the reader in non fiction.

DO NOW

Write down words and definitions into notebooks on page 309 HOLT text.

1. COPY THE FOLLOWING INTO NOTEBOOKS

TYPES OF APPEALS

LOGICAL - based on hard evidence (facts, statistics, professional opinions, percentages, etc)

EMOTIONAL - an opinion, a feeling or emotion

EXAMPLE: Lawyers use both emotional and logical appeals in court when pleading their cases.

An emotional tactic that a lawyer would use is 'Feel sorry for my client because he had a bad upbringing."

A logical tactic would be "It is a fact that my client is left handed and the evidence proves that the victim was stabbed by a right handed person."

Logical appeals make an argument STRONGER than emotional appeals because facts provide proof better than opinions.

2. Handout - identify if each is a logical or emotional appeal.

3. SHOW Mcdonalds burn case as example of an emotional appeal being effective.

4. Read defense of the jury and identify logical and emotional appeals. List them in your notes.

Closure - check for at least 5 of each identified.

4. Exit pass - Tell me about a TIME that you used both logical and emotional appeals to get what you wanted. Identify the appeals specifically. Remember, logical is based on FACTS appealing to the mind, and emotional is appealing to the heart.
