Monday, November 21, ESSAY WRITING ASSESSMENT

Objective: By the end of class, students will demonstrate understanding of character motivation, author's intent and ability to write a cohesive four paragraph essay according to guidelines provided.

DO NOW

Vocabulary - choose 4 words and write sentences with context clues to turn in.

1. Review and summerize story.

2. Review literary devices, uses and definitions.

Choose one of the topics below to type a four paragraph essay on NEO. Be sure to use SPECIFIC examples to support your ideas:

In 'Lady or the Tiger?", the author, Frank Stockton does not reveal if the princess chose the door with the tiger or the door with the lady. There is much evidence in the text to suggest either.

1. Argue both sides, one that the Lady told him to pick the door with the tiger, the other that she told him to pick the door with the lady. Start with an opening paragraph using ANT. Then a paragraph should support that she picked the door with the lady (provide evidence from text and character traits). Then do the same to support that she choose the tiger. Conclusion should restate thesis and include what you decided and why.

2. THEME - Human nature motivates us to behave the way we do.

Use this theme to explain why the KING and the princess act and do as they do. Opening paragraph using ANT, 2nd about KING, 3rd about princess and conclusion should restate thesis and include your opinion if their behaviors were justified or not.

3. JUSTICE BY CHANCE or JUSTICE by RVENGE

- compare the King's system of justice by chance to justice by revenge (cask of amontillado). Open paragraph uses ANT, 2nd describe justice by chance, 3rd justice by revenge and in conclusion, restate the thesis and provide your opinion regarding the more effective method and why you think that.

4. Closure - briefly discuss each prompt and what an effective answer would include.
