Thursday, November 17, Periods 8 & 9

Objective: By the end of class, students will learn new vocabulary, recognize author's use of irony and ambiguity and make predictions.

DO NOW

Copy vocabulary words into notebooks on page 153 of SOFT HOLT READER.

1. Define ambiguity and write into notebooks.

AMBIGUITY - A QUALITY THAT ALLOWS SOMETHING TO BE INTERPRETED IN SEVERAL DIFFERENT WAYS.

Example in movies - when the end isn't really an end and it leaves room for a sequel.
Or, at the end of the movie, you can decide what you think really happened (in INCEPTION, the viewer can decide if DiCaprio is still dreaming or made it back to reality.

2. Read / listen to AUGUST HEAT. Make predictions. Answer sidebars and end questions

3. Review answers.

Do you think it was all a coincidence? Or a plan? What do you think happens next? does the grave stone maker kill the artist? or is he being sincere?
