Monday, November 7, GENRES and Synthesizing

Objective: Students will demonstrate understanding of genres and their effects on readers.

DO NOW

Copy the following into notebooks:

A genre is a type of literature. Examples include fiction, non-fiction and poetry. Each genre has a different effect on the reader:

FICTION = makes the reader experience (think about action films and how they draw you in)

NON FICTION = makes you think (it has a lot of facts)

POETRY = makes you feel (usually not alot of action in poetry...focuses more on what is going on in someones head or heart)

1. Page 245 - holt text - QUICKWRITE. Answer this in 5-7 sentance paragraph.

2. Copy vocabulary words into notebooks (page 245). Notice what part of speech it is and write that down next to the word.

3. Read Julia Alvarez biography on page 252 and write down ten facts about her in your notebooks.

Exit pass - From reading the introduction, what kind of genre is the story we are about to read and therefore, what kind of effect is it going to have on us as readers?
